Fungus and Cancer: Candida And Fungal Infections May Cause Cancer…

Eliminating These Fungal Infections Is Vital For Getting Rid Of Cancer

Some doctors theorize that candida or other systemic fungal infections cause or at the very least contribute to the development of cancer. When you examine the link between fungus and cancer further, this makes sense. A body wide candida infection plays havoc on the immune system. Not only does the immune system become overwhelmed and worn out from fighting the infection, but candida (or other fungus) excrete toxins that further weaken and harm the body.

The major waste product of candida is acetaldehyde, which produces ethanol. Ethanol may be great in cars, but in your body it causes excessive fatigue, and reduces strength and stamina. In addition, it destroys enzymes needed for cell energy, and causes the release of free radicals that can damage DNA.  Ethanol also inhibits the absorption of iron. Because iron is one of the most important oxygen supports in the blood, ethanol in your body creates low oxygen levels. And you know what happens when your body can’t oxygenate well.  Deal with candida if you want to beat cancer.

There is a simple test to tell if you have candida overgrowth.

First thing in the morning, before you put ANYTHING in your mouth, get a clear glass of water. Better still; leave it by your bed the night before. Work up a bit of saliva, and then spit it into the glass of water. Check the water every 15 minutes or so for up to one hour.  If you have a candida yeast infection, strings (like legs) will travel down into the water from the saliva floating on top, or “cloudy” saliva will sink to the bottom of the glass, or cloudy specks will seem to be suspended in the water. If nothing develops in 30 to 45 minutes, you are probably candida free.  Some doctors implicate fungi as a cause of leukemia.  In 1999 Meinolf Karthaus, MD, watched three different children with leukemia suddenly go into remission upon receiving a triple antifungal drug cocktail for their “secondary” fungal infections.

In 1997 Mark Bielski stated that leukemia, whether acute or chronic, is intimately associated with the yeast, Candida albicans, which mutates into a fungal form when it overgrows.

Milton White, MD. believed that cancer is a chronic, infectious, fungus disease. He was able to find fungal spores in every sample of cancer tissue he studied. Some other doctors agree with him. Such as the Italian doctor who has his patients take a teaspoon of bicarbonate of soda, baking soda, in a glass of water half an hour before breakfast. This alkalinized the digestive tract so that it would help eliminate candida.

Also advocating the fungus and cancer connection, Author Doug Kaufmann asserts that fungi in foods may play a role in cancer. He has seen children become free of their documented leukemia once the child’s parents simply changed the child’s diet. Kaufmann’s diet is base on the widely published problem of mycotoxin contamination of our grain foods.

Grains such as corn, wheat, barley, sorghum, and other foods such as peanuts, are commonly contaminated with cancer-causing fungal poisons called mycotoxins. One of them, called aflatoxin, just happens to be the most carcinogenic substance on earth.

He says we consume, on average, from 0.15mg to 0.5mg of aflatoxin per day. So it is not sugar alone that is the problem in our western diet, but fungal toxins that are found in the sugary grains.   More than once has Kaufmann interviewed a caller (on his health talk show) who absolutely craved peanut butter and popcorn just prior to their diagnosis of cancer.

Kaufmann feels that antibiotics may play a role in this. Antibiotics destroy the normal, protective gut bacteria, allowing intestinal yeast and fungi to grow unchecked. Resulting in Candida overgrowth. This can lead to immune suppression, symptoms of autoimmune diseases, or even cancer  “If the onset of any symptom or disease, cancer included, was preceded by a course of antibiotics,” he says, “then look for a fungus to be at the root of your problem.”

(NaturalNews)The cancer industry is closing in on baking soda and beginning to do research in earnest about sodium bicarbonate and how it is a primary tool in the treatment of fungus. Cancer is a fungus, can be caused by a fungus, or is accompanied by late-stage fungal infections, and now the Mayo Clinic confirms this. They are not the first to say so though. Many, even from the official world of orthodox oncology, recognize the similarities of cancer and fungal infections, the decay that ties these two together in a dance that all too often ends in miserable death.  *****************************

The Mayo Clinic is saying that a fungal infection of the gastrointestinal tract mimics cancer and inflammatory bowel disease. The invasive fungus, Basidiobolus ranarum, is typically found in the soil, decaying organic matter and the gastrointestinal tracts of fish, reptiles, amphibians, and bats.

Patients with this fungal infection had non-specific symptoms such as abdominal pain or a mass that could be felt on examination. Before a conclusive diagnosis of the fungal infection was made, most patients were thought to have abdominal cancer, inflammatory bowel disease or diverticulitis. Surgical resection of the area of involvement and prolonged antifungal therapy successfully treated most patients.

Interestingly, a few years ago researchers at Johns Hopkins were surprised that the drug itraconazole, commonly used to treat toenail fungus, can also block angiogenesis, the growth of new blood vessels commonly seen in cancers. Tumor angiogenesis is the proliferation of a network of blood vessels that penetrates into cancerous growths, supplying nutrients and oxygen and removing waste products. Cancer researchers studying the conditions necessary for cancer metastasis have discovered that angiogenesis is one of the critical events required for metasteses to occur. In mice induced to have excess blood vessel growth, treatment with itraconazole reduced blood vessel growth by 67% compared to placebo. “We were surprised, to say the least, that itraconazole popped up as a potential blocker of angiogenesis,” says Dr. Jun O. Liu, professor of pharmacology. “We couldn’t have predicted that an antifungal drug would have such a role.” Itraconazole was found to reduce the numbers of circulating cancer cells, prevent the worsening of prostate cancers, and delay the need for chemotherapy. However, it has serious side effects when given in the necessary high dosages that include hypertension, low potassium levels and fluid retention. These side effects require treatment with other medications. Effects of high doses of itraconazole could lead to heart failure.

For two decades John Hopkins has recognized the increasing frequency of severe fungal infections in patients with neoplastic diseases. Most fungal infections are caused by the commonly recognized opportunistic fungi Candida spp and Aspergillus spp, and the pathogenic fungi Cryptococcus neoformans, Histoplasma capsulatum, Coccidiodes immitis, and less often by Blastomyces dermatidis. However, recently newer pathogens such as Pheohyphomycetes, Hyalohyphomycetes, Zygomycetes and other fungi of emerging importance such as Torulopsis glabrata, Trichosporon beigelii, Malassezia spp, Saccharomyces spp, Hansenula spp, Rhodotorula spp, and Geotrichum candidum have appeared as significant causes of infection in this patient population.

Dr. Tullio Simoncini does not say that cancer is caused by yeast; what he is telling the world is that the cancer is a yeast overgrowth. What causes the cancer (or a yeast-filled tumor) is another thing. Simoncini has always insisted that tumors are white because they are fungi. Some have made fun of him, but looking around at the extremely sparse information about the subject, I ran into one person saying:

“If someone had asked me a year ago what color the inside of a tumor was, I would have guessed red and gray. When they did the biopsy, I asked to see the tissue specimens: five quarter-inch to half-inch strings of vermicelli (Italian for little worms) with little streakings of blood. They didn’t look evil to me, just strings of fat. The entire mass was white inside as the pathology report stated.

Specialists in throat and mouth cancer say that cancers can be red or white patches: any patch that appears randomly and is red or white in color could be a mouth cancer symptom. The white patches in the mouth are called leukoplakia and the red patches are called erythroplakia, which are pre-cancerous conditions. Though these red or white patches are not always cancerous, it could be the result of a fungal infection caused by Candida called thrush. Thrush will lead to a red patch that often bleeds after the white patch disappears. A small amount of this fungus lives in your mouth most of the time. It is usually kept in check by your immune system and other types of germs that also normally live in your mouth. However, when your immune system is weak, the fungus can grow.

Fungal Mycotoxins:

It just so happens that a toxin produced by mold on nuts and grains can cause liver cancer, according to University of California Irvine Researchers. And a French case-control study of 1,010 breast cancer cases and 1,950 controls with nonmalignant diseases found that breast cancer was associated with increased frequency of mold-fermented cheese consumption. Fungi produce mycotoxins, which can kill us or cause cancer.

Dr. Wang and Groopman from the Environmental Health Sciences Department at Johns Hopkins published on the effects of mold toxins on DNA in Mutation Research, a leading cancer journal. They said mycotoxins with carcinogenic potency include aflatoxins, sterigmatocystin, ochratoxin, fumonisins, zearalenone, and some Penicillium toxins. Most of these carcinogenic mycotoxins are genotoxic agents. Aflatoxin is a potent genotoxic agent, is mutagenic in many model systems and produces chromosomal aberrations, micronuclei, sister chromatid exchange, unscheduled DNA synthesis, and chromosomal strand breaks. Most strikingly, the relationship between aflatoxin exposure and development of human hepatocellular carcinoma (liver cancer) is demonstrated by studies.

Harrison et al. (1993) examined human breast cancer tissue for evidence of the presence of aflatoxin. The researchers examined human DNA from a variety of tissues and organs to identify and quantify aflatoxin DNA-adducts. Such adducts are considered to be proof of the mycotoxin’s presence in a particular tissue. Aflatoxins may in fact be a risk factor for cancer induction in a variety of organs in man, in the same manner as that of cigarette smoking.

DNA from normal and tumorous tissue obtained from patients with cancer of the breast was examined. Tumor tissues had higher aflatoxin-adduct levels than did normal tissue from the same individual. The result of this study verifies the presence of carcinogenic aflatoxin within the cancer tissue and thus implicates aflatoxin as a cause of breast cancer. That is the same as saying cancer is a fungus or is caused by a fungus and this is what Dr. Simoncini has been saying all along. **********************************************************

Intensive Care Units are particularly on alert with immunocompromised and oncology patients for fungal infections. “Patients with brain tumors used to have a life expectancy of 3-12 months, but better treatment has allowed them to live a bit longer,” said Brenda Shelton, clinical nurse specialist at the Sidney Kimmel Comprehensive Cancer Center, Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore. “The last two brain tumor ICU patients we treated died of infection, not of their disease. One patient had a rare fungus, and the other had candidemia. Years ago, you would not see most of these fungal infections in patients with brain tumors because they would not live long enough.”

“The biggest misconception is the belief that fungal infections are rare,” Shelton said. “Another misconception is fungal infections are like every other severe infection. They are harder to manage, harder to eradicate and more frequent than people realize.” One of the most common complications involved in treating patients with hematologic cancer is fungal infections.

Aspergillus niger fungal infection in human lungs produces large amounts of oxalic acid, which is extremely toxic to the blood vessels and which may cause fatal pulmonary hemorrhages. Consequently, oxalic acid (calcium oxalate crystals) in the sputum or lung specimens of patients is also an indication of an Aspergillus infection of the lung. These calcium oxalate crystals are the same as the calcium oxalate found in breast cancers. The presence of oxalates in the breast is indicative of the presence of fungi interwoven within the stages of breast cancer development. Since humans do not make oxalic acid themselves, this is an appropriate conclusion.

Dr. Robert Young states, “Bacteria, yeast/fungi, and mold are not the cause of a cancerous condition but are the result and the evidence of cells and tissues biologically transforming from a healthy state and to an unhealthy state.” Dr. Young astutely observed that, “over-acidification of the body leads to the development of chronic yeast and fungal infections and ultimately a cancerous condition of the cells and tissues.”

If one has cancer, chances are pretty good that one
also has a fungal infection to one degree or another.

According to The Home Medical Encyclopedia, in 1963 about one-half of all Americans suffered from an “unrecognized” systemic fungal condition. Far more Americans suffer from fungal infections today as antibiotics, hormone replacement therapies, and birth control pills continue to be consumed like candy. Thus more and more children are becoming infected with candidal meningitis or viral meningitis, which means their systems are suffering under the weight of fungi who put out an assortment of poisons – or mycotoxins. ***************************************

The current controversy over sodium bicarbonate and its use in oncology might be relatively new but baking soda has a long history of helping people get through the worst medical conditions. The Eloquent Peasant, an Egyptian literary work dated around 2000 B.C., refers to a peddler selling natron, a natural blend of sodium bicarbonate, chloride and sodium carbonate used in mummification, just one of hundreds of uses this compound has been put to. Resveratrol in phytochemical synergy may help prevent skin cancer

NIH-funded scientists at the UT Health Science Center San Antonio are finding that certain phytochemicals, or natural plant compounds (like resveratrol), when given in combinations,  may suppress damage that can cause skin cancer.The substances, which occur naturally in grapes, berries, walnuts and a number of other plant-based foods, were tested on mice that had been genetically manipulated to be sensitive to skin cancer initiation and promotion/progression. Given in combination, even at low doses, the phytochemicals proved protective.“On the basis of our research, supplements and creams or sunscreens may be developed, tested in humans and then used to prevent skin cancer,” said  Zbigniew Walaszek, Ph.D., research associate professor of pharmacology at the Health Science Center.The natural agents – available as dietary supplements – include   resveratrol, found in the skin of red grapes, and grape seed extract   (rich in certain polyphenols). Others are calcium D-glucarate,   a salt of D-glucaric acid, which is present in the human bloodstream and in many fruits and vegetables, and ellagic acid, found in a host of berries and in walnuts.

Synergistic effects of phytochemicals

Each of these compounds works in a different way, so giving them in combination is most protective. Scientists have administered the agents both topically and in the diet.

In one study, the team induced skin cancer by shaving the backs of rodents and applying a chemical that produces a genetic mutation. This was done twice a week for four weeks. At the same time, researchers applied topical resveratrol and fed the mice diets supplemented with various combinations of the plant substances.

The team evaluated several outcomes, including thickness in the outer layer of the skin. An increase in thickness indicates that precancerous cells are multiplying. Researchers also monitored mutations in Ha-ras, an oncogene that is a biomarker of cancer initiation, and inflammation, which is important in tumor promotion.

Even low doses of plant agent combinations produced protective effects, while the plant substances given individually produced markedly less benefit.

Preventing epithelial cell transformation to cancer

Dr. Walaszek’s colleague and wife, Margaret Hanausek, Ph.D., research associate professor of pharmacology, said the findings hold great potential for those most at risk for skin cancer and other cancers involving epithelial cells, including lung cancer.

“The combined inhibitory effects of different plant chemicals are expected  to be particularly beneficial to, for example, smokers, former smokers or individuals with heavily tanned skin, who carry thousands of cells already initiated for malignant transformation,” Dr. Hanausek said.

Research scientist Magdalena Kowalczyk, Ph.D., agreed: “Described combinations may be very useful in the prevention of skin cancer and other epithelial cancers in humans, achieving a high efficacy and potency with reduced side effects.”

The team continues to look for the best combinations of the natural agents in suppressing different events during skin cancer development, she said.

Future directions in phytochemicals versus cancer research

Researchers acknowledge that not all information – for example, effects on organs such as the lungs – can be gleaned from a skin cancer model. But they say it is an exciting start.

“Our next step is to go to an ultraviolet B light model of skin cancer initiation and confirm our results,” Dr. Walaszek said (Courtesy of EurekAlert!, a service of AAAS).

The aim is to understand elements that may contribute to the successful or unsuccessful conveyance of skin cancer prevention messages and their uptake by the public.A systematic review was undertaken using evidence identified through searching electronic bibliographic databases and Web sites and reference list checks. Predefined inclusion and exclusion criteria were used. Sixteen study reports (relating to 15 separate studies) were included from the United Kingdom, United States, Australia, Canada and New Zealand. Each included study was quality appraised, and the findings were extracted into an evidence table. A coding scheme, framed by the Health Belief Model, was developed by the reviewers and informed analysis and synthesis.

This showed that most people perceived their susceptibility to skin cancer, and its severity, as low. While benefits of adopting changed behaviour were acknowledged, there were substantial barriers to this, including positive perceptions of a tan as healthy and attractive and the hassle of covering up or using sunscreen.

Peers, parents and media may offer ‘cues to action’ that encourage adoption of preventative behaviour and finally self-efficacy or the perceived ability to make such changes. Effective health education messages will need to address the   barriers to adopting protective behaviours identified through this review.

The mycotoxin aflatoxin is  recognized by the World Health Organization as a known carcinogen. Aflatoxins are produced by numerous species of the mold aspergillus. This reality propels my determination to proactively and aggressively respond to our high toxic mold exposure. Cancer looms as a possibility for everyone, but since our family tested positive for aflatoxins, the reality hits even closer to home.This week the Reuters news agency reported a link between a common antifungal drug and reduced growth of tumors in mice. A common antifungal drug can slow tumors growing in mice and should be investigated as a potentially cheap and easy way to fight cancer in people, researchers reported on Monday.Although it did not completely wipe out the tumors, the drug called itraconazole may boost the effects of other drugs, the researchers reported in the journal Cancer Cell.Itraconazole is marketed under the brand name Sporanox by Johnson & Johnson subsidiary Janssen Pharmaceutica, mostly for treating a fungal infection called aspergillus.

The drug affects a so-called cascade of effects through a molecular pathway called Hedgehog, the researchers reported.

The researchers at Stanford University in California were looking for potential cancer drugs.  They know that the Hedgehog pathway is involved in the development of cancer, so they looked for drugs that interfere with it.

“There is a fairly broad range of tumors in which this molecular cascade, called the Hedgehog pathway, plays an important role,” Stanford’s Philip Beachy, who worked on the study, said in a statement.

“The virtue of screening existing drugs is that you already have all the information about dosage and toxicity, and you can move into clinical trials fairly readily.”

The researchers looked at 2,400 different drugs in a so-called library of drugs that had either been tested in people or already approved by the Food and Drug Administration, looking at the mechanism of action. The least toxic one they found was itraconazole.

Itraconazole has been studied for nearly 25 years, and we therefore have a good understanding of its safety and potential side effects,” the researchers wrote.

They tested mice and found an oral solution of itraconazole significantly slowed the growth of tumors  njected under the skin. Untreated mice grew giant tumors during the same   time and were euthanized.

Testing mice this way is   far different from the natural development of cancer in people, but the drug   should be tested in cancer patients, the researchers said.

“It might be possible   with two compounds to achieve a more potent block at even lower drug   concentrations,” said Beachy. “If so, it’s possible that there is a   population of patients that can be treated relatively soon.”

A more controversial theory suggests an even stronger link between cancer and   fungus. Italian oncologist Dr. Tullio Simoncini believes cancer is a fungus   and has treated patients with sodium bicarbonate (baking soda). A documentary   by Massimo Mazzucco examines Simoncini’s hypothesis in detail.

Studies also link cancer prevention with the antifungal hero chlorophyll.   Chlorophyll and its derivative chlorophyllin have been found to be effective   in limiting the absorption of aflatoxins in humans. One such study was released in December of last year. Another was released in 2001 by Johns   Hopkins University. Those who took chlorophyllin showed a 55 percent   reduction in aflatoxin-DNA damage.

Why Almost All Sinus Infections Are Misdiagnosed and Mistreated

Mold pollution is a key element of indoor air pollution that few people understand. Mold has been making the headlines more frequently over the last several years, largely as a result of Hurricane Katrina. And this year has brought enormous record-breaking floods in the U.S. not seen in more than a century, including the massive overflow of the Mississippi River, certain to activate serious mold infestations in certain areas of the country. *****************************************************  (Very Important****************)

If you live in one of those water-stricken areas, you could already be “sleeping with the enemy.”

Along with obvious places such as shower stalls and damp basements, there can be many hidden sources of mold in your home. Particularly, if you’ve had plumbing problems or leaks in your roof, mold may grow and release spores from places such as behind drywall, under carpet or carpet padding, or in wood.

But mold can find its way into some rather surprising places. One study found that even Christmas trees can breed mold, quietly releasing millions of spores into the room and causing winter allergies and asthma attacks. The study found that indoor air quality dropped six-fold over the 14 days a Christmas tree typically decorates a room. Millions of mold spores may even be hiding in your pillows.

And, surprisingly, if you live in a dry climate you may be even MORE at risk—mold grows routinely in desert regions, and the desert naturally selects the most tenacious forms.

Mold Can Be Deadly

What many people don’t realize is that mold can make you extremely sick, or even kill you. According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA),1 all molds have the potential to cause ill health. The type and severity of your symptoms depend, in part, on the types of mold present, the extent of your exposure, your age and general health, and your existing sensitivities or allergies.

At a 2003 environmental medicine symposium in Dallas, studies of more than 1,600 patients suffering health issues related to fungal exposure were presented. These patients experienced major medical problems, including the following:

  • Muscle and joint pain
  • Headache, anxiety, depression, memory loss, and visual disturbances
  • Immune system disturbances and fatigue
  • GI problems
  • Shortness of breath

Yet, medical professionals are sometimes not up to speed on how extensive and devastating mold can be to human health, often missing important biological clues that you’re being affected by mold. It is important to be aware of these potential problems because your physician may NOT be, and you need to take the wheel as your own health advocate.

Mold’s Favorite Places in Your Home

Fungi grow by releasing reproductive cells (spores) into the air, just as plants reproduce by spreading seeds. The airborne spores are invisible to the naked eye, which is a major reason mold is such a problem. It is not uncommon to find hundreds or even thousands of mold spores per cubic foot of indoor air. Spores are extremely small (1-100 microns)—20 million spores would fit on a postage stamp.

Spores can survive harsh environmental conditions, such as dryness, that do not support normal mold growth. In fact, many spores can lie dormant for decades until favorable conditions allow them to spring back to life.

Molds can be found almost anywhere; they can grow on virtually any substance, provided moisture and oxygen are present. There are molds that can grow on wood, paper, carpet, tile, sheetrock, insulation, leather, fabrics, and foods. Molds survive by digesting whatever substrate they are growing on, which is a real problem when it happens to be your floorboards. There is no way to eliminate all mold and mold spores from your indoor environment; the only way to control indoor mold growth is to control moisture. The most common indoor places for mold to take hold are damp areas, such as:

  • Bathrooms and kitchens, especially under sinks—particularly leaky ones
  • Behind or under appliances that hide slow plumbing leaks (refrigerators, dishwashers, washing machines, etc.)
  • Roof leaks
  • Around windows where condensation collects
  • High humidity areas of your home, such as basements

Often, the first sign of a mold problem is a “musty” odor. You are probably familiar with the smell of mildew—mildew is simply a variety of mold. You could also notice bowed or buckled floorboards, discolored carpet, a new water stain on your wall, or black or white specks—all signs you could be developing a mold problem. But what type of life form is mold?

Types of Fungus Among Us

Mold is a type of fungus, as are mushrooms and yeast. There are between 100,000 and 400,000 types of fungi (estimates vary), and of these, scientists have identified more than 1,000 types of mold growing inside houses across America.olds are classified into three groups according to human responses:

  • Allergenic Molds: These don’t usually produce life-threatening effects and are most problematic if you are allergic or asthmatic. The challenge is in figuring out what you are sensitive to. Children are particularly susceptible to mold allergies.
  • Pathogenic Molds: These produce some sort of infection, which is of particular concern if your immune system is suppressed. They can cause hypersensitivity pneumonitis, an acute response resembling bacterial pneumonia. An example is Aspergillus fumigatus, which can grow in the lungs of immune-compromised individuals.
  • Toxigenic Molds (aka “toxic molds”): These dangerous molds produce mycotoxins, which can have serious health effects on almost anyone. Possible reactions include immunosuppression and cancer. Mycotoxins are chemical toxins present within or on the surface of the mold spore, which you then unwittingly inhale, ingest, or touch. An example of this is aflatoxin, one of the most potent carcinogens known to mankind. Aflatoxin grows on peanuts and grains, and on some other foods.

The five most common indoor mold varieties are:

  • Alternaria: Commonly found in your nose, mouth, and upper respiratory tract; can cause allergic responses
  • Aspergillus:sually found in warm, extremely damp climates, and a common occupant of house dust; produces mycotoxins; can cause lung infections (aspergillosis)
  • Cladosporium: This very common outdoor fungus can find its way indoors to grow on textiles, wood and other damp, porous materials; triggers hay fever and asthma symptoms
  • Penicillium: Very common species found on wallpaper, decaying fabrics, carpet, and fiberglass duct insulation; known for causing allergies and asthma; some species produce mycotoxins, one being the common antibiotic penicillin
  • Stachybotrys:xtremely toxic “black mold” that produces mycotoxins that can cause serious breathing difficulties and bleeding of the lungs, among other health problems; thankfully, less common in homes than the other four, but not rare; found on wood or paper (cellulose products), but NOT on concrete, linoleum or tile

Mycotoxins: From Antibiotics to Biological Warfare Agents

Molds produce a number of powerful substances that can affect your health in beneficial or detrimental ways. It should come as no surprise that fungi produce potent biologically active compounds—after all, lysergic acid (the parent compound of LSD) is produced by a mushroom! And penicillin is a mycotoxin produced by the mold Penicillium, better known as an antibiotic.

Some mold compounds are volatile and released directly into the air, known as microbial volatile organic compounds (mVOCs).ragments of the cell walls of molds (glucans) can also be inhaled and cause inflammatory respiratory reactions, including a flu-like illness called Organic Dust Toxic Syndrome (ODTS).

But the most serious danger comes from highly poisonous agents called mycotoxins.

More than 200 mycotoxins have been identified from common molds. Mycotoxins interfere with RNA synthesis and may cause DNA damage.The mycotoxins that have probably received the most attention by researchers are the trichothecenes, produced by Stachybotyrs chartarum and Aspergillus versicolor. Mycotoxins, even in minute quantities, are lipid-soluble and readily absorbed by your intestinal lining, airways, and skin. Some are so poisonous that they have been studied and developed as biological warfare agents as far back as the 1940s. Aflatoxin and trichothecenes are prime examples.

Even spores that are no longer able to reproduce can still harm your health due to these mycotoxins—in other words, “dead” mold spores are every bit as dangerous as “live” ones. The spores do not produce the toxins—rather, it is thought that the toxins are produced when the spores are produced, by the mold colony. Scientists believe that mycotoxins are the organism’s way of holding a competitive edge by defeating other organisms that are trying to thrive in the same environment—like humans, for example.

Adverse Health Effects from Mold

A lot of people end up treating the symptoms of mold exposure and never get to the root of the problem. Oftentimes, they don’t even make the connection that mold is the cause of their problems… and neither does their physician. According to mycotoxin expert Dr. Harriet Ammann, exposure to indoor molds can damage the systems of your body in the following ways:

Vascular: blood vessel fragility, hemorrhage from tissues or lungs Digestive: diarrhea, vomiting, hemorrhage, liver damage, fibrosis, and   necrosis
Respiratory: trouble breathing, bleeding from lungs Neurological: tremors, loss of coordination, headaches, depression,ultiple sclerosis
Skin: rashes, burning, sloughing, photosensitivity Urinary: kidney toxicity
Reproductive: infertility, changes in reproductive cycles Immune: Immunosuppression



One of the challenges of diagnosing a mold allergy is that reactions are so variable from one person to another. Some people start having memory problems, while others may experience sudden changes in disposition, such as agitation, anger, panic, or depression. Headaches are common but don’t affect everyone exposed to mold.

Common symptoms are:

  • Coughing and wheezing
  • Sinus problems and post-nasal drip
  • Itchy rashes
  • Joint pain

What You Don’t Know CAN Hurt You: The Billings Story

Kurt and Lee Ann Billings learned the hard way about the damaging health effects of mold—and the level of ignorance about mold’s effects by medical professionals. Living in a home in the outer impact zone of Hurricane Katrina, they suffered a progressive array of symptoms for which their physicians had no solution. They later discovered that their illness was due to mold infestation in their home.

What started as tightness and burning in their chests and itchy eyes soon progressed into severely diminished lung capacity that did not resolve, despite moving out of their home. After extensive research and eventually recovering their health, they wrote the book Mold: The War Within n hopes of educating a poorly informed and disadvantaged public.

On page 11, they write:

“It appears, based on our experiences and research, that much of the medical community is stuck in a time warp when it comes to fungal illnesses—even in regard to the notably researched and highly publicized condition of fungal-induced sinusitis.”

What they are referring to is research done by the Mayo Clinic in the 1990s that strongly suggests NEARLY ALL chronic sinusitis (inflammation of the membranes of your nose and sinus cavities) is caused by fungi, but blamed on bacteria—then mistreated using antibiotics. The findings were published in 1999 in two peer-reviewed journals, Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology and Mayo Clinic Proceedings.Yet, the Billings report that most physicians are unaware of this study, or at least of its significance.

A 1999 Mayo Clinic press release stated:

“Mayo Clinic researchers say they have found the cause of most chronic sinus infections—an immune system response to fungus.

The Mayo Clinic study suggests that 96 percent of the people who suffer from chronic sinusitis are “fungal sensitized,” meaning they have immune responses triggered by inhaled fungal organisms.

According to Billings, 37 million people in the U.S. suffer from chronic sinusitis, and its incidence has been increasing over the past decade. Yet, most physicians continue to believe that fungi are an uncommon cause of respiratory infections, accounting for less than 10 percent. Furthermore, in most cases, antibiotics are not effective for chronic sinusitis because they target bacteria, NOT fungi.

Antibiotics and steroids can actually worsen fungal-related infections by destroying your body’s natural biological terrain, creating an internal incubation ground for fungi.

This points to an enormous number of chronic sinus infections that are being misdiagnosed and mistreated!  ***************************

The bottom line in all of this is, if you have chronic sinusitis, you MUST approach it from the perspective of a fungal infection, not a bacterial infection, even if it means having to educate your healthcare provider. A good place to start is by sharing the Mayo Clinic study referenced above. What to Do Once You’ve Established That Mold Is a Problem

Mold spores are very difficult to destroy, even with cleaning agents, such as hot water or bleach (which is itself toxic). The best way to reduce the problem is through smart preventive measures.

According to Dr. Rapp, first and foremost you want to get away from the problematic area—which means move if you have to.

She warns:

I’ve seen people try to stay in a moldy house when their child is very sick or they are very sick. They try to clean the place up. They take out the moldy carpet and decide to paint the moldy walls. But they can become so desperately ill that it is very hard to treat them in the future.”

If you can’t move, there are other remedial steps you need to take to address the problem:

  • Get a high-quality air purifier to control mold toxins. In addition to the mold itself, you need to make sure you get rid of any mold toxins. When a mold breaks down, it disintegrates, and every little particle may contain mycotoxins that have the capability of making you very sick.One option is a photocatalytic oxidation (PCO) unit. I personally like these because they cover the whole house (up to 3000 square feet), require little maintenance, and are relatively inexpensive.

***Please understand that no air filter in the world will take care of mold issues until you have the humidity under control and the mold properly cleaned from your house.  *************************

  • Professional remediation. If your mold problem is sizeable, or if you have black mold, you may want to consider hiring a professional remediator. Unless proper precautions are taken, undertaking black mold removal on your own can be almost as hazardous as doing nothing at all,ecause spores will be stirred up and sent airborne during the cleaning process.  ***********************This may not be cheap, but it’s better than the alternative. If you catch the problem early, you can save yourself tens of thousands of dollars in extra cleanup costs. (Trust me, as I made this mistake myself and wouldn’t want to see anyone else go through it.) Make sure a remediator doesn’t use chemicals you’re sensitive to—a chemical allergy is the LAST thing you need while you are recovering from a mold poisoning!

Warning! Be Careful How You Chose Your Remediator

There is no question that a high-quality active air purifier can help control mold issues but it will NOT remediate against them. You can use the best air filters and purifiers and they will never solve the problem if you continue to have water intrusion into you home that increases the humidity and feeds the growth of the mold.

You will need to stop the water at its source and carefully remove and clean the mold infested materials. While this may superficially seem an easy task, let me assure you that it isn’t.

I recently had a leak in my basement that was improperly remediated for $10K and the cause was not addressed so the problem worsened, which more than tripled the price to properly clean it up. That is part of the reason that prompted me to contact some of the leading experts in this area and learn how to do this properly.

So let me tell you from personal experience, you need to fine a qualified expert and professional that is certified by one of the agencies below. I would also suggest getting several bids for the work.

You can find a contractor or professional listings on the following sites. Both the IICRC and NORMI are certifying organizations for mold remediation, but the IICRC certification is perhaps the most widely used:

  • IICRC (Institute of Inspection, Cleaning and Restoration Certification)
  • ACAC (American Council for Accredited Certification)—a certifying body that is third-party accredited.
  • The IAQA (Indoor Air Quality Association)—a membership organization with no certification program (the ACAC handles this by agreement)
  • RIA (Restoration Industry Association)
  • NORMI (National Organization of Remediators and Mold Inspectors)

Keep in mind that a mere certification or listing may not be enough. Also evaluate the remediator’s qualifications and insurance (liability as well as workman’s comp). With the ACAC, there are a few different levels.

A Great Natural Treatment for Mold Allergy

If you have a mold allergy, there is a little-known treatment strategy that Dr. Rapp describes as “one of the best hidden secrets.” It’s called provocation neutralization.20

Provocation neutralization (PN) offers allergy sufferers permanent relief with virtually no side effects, whether the allergy is to mold or something else. The success rate for this approach is very high, and you can receive the treatment at home.

There is also research suggesting vitamin D could prevent mold allergies, so make sure your vitamin D levels are optimal.


Skip the Surgery for Knee Osteoarthritis

Arthroscopy of the knee joint for osteoarthritis, also called arthrosis or gonarthrosis,has no detectable benefit. That is the conclusion of a final report published by the German Institute for Quality and Efficiency in Health Care (IQWiG) on May 12th 2014. The study included new data in which strengthening exercises under the supervision of a physical therapist were used as comparison therapy. This data did not changethe result of IQWiG’s preliminary report that was published in September 2013.

A release from the institute explains that the benefit of therapeutic arthroscopy with lavage and possible debridement for the treatment of arthrosis of the knee joint is not proven. There was no hint, indication or proof of benefit of therapeutic arthroscopy in comparison with non-active comparator interventions such as sham surgery for any patient-relevant outcome. From the active comparator therapies, only the injection of glucocorticoids into the knee joint produced worse results than arthroscopy for the outcome.

Arthroscopy aims to relieve symptoms

Osteoarthritis of the knee is a chronic progressive disease that often occurs in both knees at the same time. Increasing failure of the joint is associated with changes in the structure of the joint, pain, and loss of flexibility. The condition makes daily tasks such as climbing stairs difficult and can reduce quality of life. The risk factors of gonarthrosis include age, sex, genetic factors and obesity.

Therapeutic arthroscopy of the knee joint is an endoscopic procedure where the knee joint is flushed with saline solution. Sometimes meniscal or cartilage abnormalities are removed or smoothed (debridement). The aim of this procedure is to relieve symptoms like pain and improve flexibility. Wide variety of treatments IQWiG compared this treatment with several other interventions, including no treatment, sham treatment ,and active treatments without arthroscopy such as glucocorticoid injections into the knee joint. The effect of these treatments on the daily activities and the quality of life of the people affected was of particular interest. Changes in the severity of symptoms and possible side effects of the treatments were also compared, for example infections after surgery. Studies were subject to uncertainty Eleven randomized controlled trials with a total of more than 1000 patients were identified for this research question, but a considerable number of them were subject to uncertainty. For example, in many cases the interventions were not blinded: The patients knew then whether or not they had arthroscopy. Sham arthroscopies can be done, however, in which patients receive a small skin incision on the knee, but no further surgery. This kind of “placebo surgery”, albeit controversial, is particularly informative for the assessment.

No advantage over sham interventions No benefit of therapeutic arthroscopy in comparison with sham surgery and no treatment could be derived from most study results, and no clear conclusion could be drawn on potential harm from adverse treatment effects. It was already known that invasive treatment methods often have a particularly strong placebo effect. However, the extent of improvement perceived by the patients after placebo arthroscopy in these studies was surprising. The comparison with active interventions was also sobering. Arthroscopy had a slight advantage only in comparison with glucocorticoid injection into the knee joint: The symptoms were somewhat milder. The study did not provide any information about whether the quality of life of the people affected also improved in comparison with the injection. Also no benefit in comparison with strengthening exercises Data from patients who had gonarthrosis with damage of the medial meniscus were used for the comparison of arthroscopic interventions with strengthening exercises under the supervision of a physical therapist. There was no significant effect in the two outcomes “pain” and “global assessment of the symptoms” at any time point of the study. Hence the overall result is the same as in the preliminary report: The benefit of arthroscopy of the knee joint for the treatment of gonarthrosis is not proven.

Process of report production IQWiG published the preliminary results in the form of the preliminary report in September 2013 and interested parties were invited to submit comments. At the end of the commenting procedure, the preliminary report was revised and sent as a final report to the commissioning agency in May 2014. The written comments submitted were published in a separate document at the same time as the final report. The report was produced in collaboration with external experts.

Arthritis, which causes pain, stiffness and swelling, is one of the most common health problems in the United States. According to the federal Centers for Disease Control, it afflicts an estimated one in every five adults. Because it so often leads to painful movement or exertion, the CDC says that people with arthritis are likely to be less physically active than those who don’t have it. Some people, the CDC says, think they will make arthritis worse with exercise, while other don’t know how to exercise safely.

A physical therapist can teach patients how to be active safely and to modify activities correctly, according to Harvard Medical School. But besides this kind of therapy, the Harvard experts say, there are things you can do for yourself to make life with arthritis simpler. Here are their suggestions:

Stay on the move. Don’t hold the same position for too long. The Harvard experts recommend getting up every 15 minutes and stretching, for example, if you’re working at a desk. The experts also suggest doing that while you’re reading or watching television.

Work with your strengths. The Harvard experts recommend using your strongest muscles and joints to help make tasks easily. If your finger and wrist joints ache, push open heavy doors with the side or your arm or your shoulder. If you have problems with your hip or knee, reduce stress while climbing stairs by leading with the strong leg going up and the weaker leg going down.

Plan an anti-pain campaign. Think about how you can minimize difficult or painful movements, the Harvard experts say. Keep items you need where they are needed (cleaning supplies in your bathroom, for example, rather than in a cleaning closet). Streamline your routines so you can minimize movements that are painful.

Go for gadgets. Devices that save labor and help you adapt can make life a lot easier. The Harvard experts cite a long-handled gripper that can help you get out-of-reach objects. Chair extenders can increase the height of chairs, making them easier to get out of. Ask your doctor what devices would be right for you.

Ask for help. Although arthritis is a common cause of disability, it’s rare for people with arthritis to become severely disabled. But, the Harvard experts caution, the emotional burden of arthritis can be a heavy one, with patients afraid of becoming too dependent. Talk with family and friends about the effect arthritis has on you, and ask for help when you need it.

6,000 Steps a Day Helps Ease OA

Research done at from Sargent College at Boston University in Massachusetts shows that walking just 6,000 steps a day reduces the risk of developing mobility issues such as difficulty getting up from a chair and climbing stairs that are often associated with knee osteoarthritis (OA). The typical recommendation I 10,000 steps – about five miles — a day but BU team found that fewer steps will do the trick. The study, which was funded in part by the National Institutes of Health, was published in June 2014 in in Arthritis Care & Research.

A release from the publishers notes that nearly 27 million Americans age 25 and older are diagnosed with OA according to a prevalence study by Lawrence et al. (Arthritis Rheum, 2008). Previous research reports that knee OA is the leading cause of functional limitation among older adults. Also, data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES III) state that 80% of OA patients have some limitation in movement, with 11% of adults with knee OA needing assistance with personal care.

While walking is a common daily physical activity for older adults, medical evidence reports that two-thirds of U.S. adults with arthritis walk less than 90 minutes each week. “Our study examines if more walking equates with better functioning, and if so, how much daily walking is needed to minimize risk of developing problems with mobility in people with knee OA,” said Daniel White, PT, ScD,.

For the present study, researchers measured daily steps taken by 1788 people with or at risk for knee OA, who were part of the Multicenter Osteoarthritis Study. Walking was measured with a monitor over seven days and functional limitation evaluated two years later, defined as a slow walking speed and a Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Arthritis Index (WOMAC) physical function score greater than 28 out of 68. Walking an additional 1,000 steps each day was associated with between a 16% to 18% reduction in incident functional limitation two years later.

Walking less than 6,000 steps daily was the best threshold for identifying those who developed functional limitation. Dr. White concludes, “Walking is an inexpensive activity and despite the common popular goal of walking 10,000 steps per day, our study finds only 6,000 steps are necessary to realize benefits. We encourage those with or at risk of knee OA to walk at least 3,000 or more steps each day, and ultimately progress to 6,000 steps daily to minimize the risk of developing difficulty with mobility.”

Skin cancer

Skin cancers (skin malignant neoplasms) are named after the type of skin cell from which they arise. Basal cell cancer originates from the lowest layer of the epidermis, and is the most common but least dangerous skin cancer. Squamous cell cancer originates from the middle layer, and is less common but more likely to spread and, if untreated, become fatal. Melanoma, which originates in the pigment-producing cells (melanocytes), is the least common, but most aggressive, most likely to spread and, if untreated, become fatal.

Most cases are caused by over-exposure to UV rays from the sun or sunbeds.Treatment is generally via surgical removal.

Melanoma has one of the highest survival rates among cancers, with over 75% of people surviving 10 years in the UK during 2005–2007. In the UK in 2010, 12,818 people were diagnosed with malignant melanoma, and about 100,000 people were diagnosed with non-melanoma skin cancer. There were 2,746 deaths from skin cancer, 2,203 from malignant melanoma and 546 from non-malignant melanoma. In the US in 2008, 59,695 people were diagnosed with melanoma, and 8,623 people died from it. In Australia more than 12,500 new cases of melanoma are reported each year, out of which more than 1,500 die from the disease.  Australia has the highest per capita incidence of melanoma in the world.

There are three main types of skin cancer: basal cell carcinoma (BCC), squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) and malignant melanoma.



Basal cell carcinoma Note the pearly translucency to   fleshy color, tiny blood vessels on the surface, and sometime ulceration   which can be characteristics. The key term is translucency.


Squamous cell carcinoma Commonly presents as a red,   crusted, or scaly patch or bump. Often a very rapid growing tumor.


Malignant melanoma The common appearance is an   asymmetrical area, with an irregular border, color variation, and often   greater than 6 mm diameter.


Basal cell carcinomas are present on sun-exposed areas of the skin, especially the face. They rarely metastasize and rarely cause death. They are easily treated with surgery or radiation. Squamous cell carcinomas (SCC) are common, but much less common than basal cell cancers. They metastasize more frequently than BCCs. Even then, the metastasis rate is quite low, with the exception of SCC of the lip, ear, and in immunosuppressed patients. Melanomas are the least frequent of the 3 common skin cancers. They frequently metastasize, and could potentially cause death once they spread.

Less common skin cancers include: Dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans, Merkel cell carcinoma, Kaposi’s sarcoma, keratoacanthoma, spindle cell tumors, sebaceous carcinomas, microcystic adnexal carcinoma, Pagets’s disease of the breast, atypical fibroxanthoma, leimyosarcoma, and angiosarcoma.

The BCC and the SCCs often carry a UV-signature mutation indicating that these cancers are caused by UV-B radiation via the direct DNA damage. However the malignant melanoma is predominantly caused by UV-A radiation via the indirect DNA damage.The indirect DNA damage is caused by free radicals and reactive oxygen species. Research indicates that the absorption of three sunscreen ingredients into the skin, combined with a 60-minute exposure to UV, leads to an increase of free radicals in the skin, if applied in too little quantities and too infrequently. However, the researchers add that newer creams often do not contain these specific compounds, and that the combination of other ingredients tends to retain the compounds on the surface of the skin. They also add the frequent re-application reduces the risk of radical formation.

Signs and symptoms

There are a variety of different skin cancer symptoms. These include changes in the skin that do not heal, ulcering in the skin, discolored skin, and changes in existing moles, such as jagged edges to the mole and enlargement of the mole.

Basal cell carcinoma

Basal cell carcinoma usually presents as a raised, smooth, pearly bump on the sun-exposed skin of the head, neck or shoulders. Sometimes small blood vessels can be seen within the tumor. Crusting and bleeding in the center of the tumor frequently develops. It is often mistaken for a sore that does not heal. This form of skin cancer is the least deadly and with proper treatment can be completely eliminated, often without scarring.

Squamous cell carcinoma

Squamous cell carcinoma is commonly a red, scaling, thickened patch on sun-exposed skin. Some are firm hard nodules and dome shaped like keratoacanthomas. Ulceration and bleeding may occur. When SCC is not treated, it may develop into a large mass. Squamous cell is the second most common skin cancer. It is dangerous, but not nearly as dangerous as a melanoma.


Most melanomas consist of various colors from shades of brown to black. A small amount of melanomas are pink, red or fleshy in color; these are called amelanotic melanomas which tend to be more aggressive. Warning signs of malignant melanoma include change in the size, shape, color or elevation of a mole. Other signs are the appearance of a new mole during adulthood or pain, itching, ulceration, redness around the site, or bleeding at the site. An often-used mnemonic is “ABCDE”, where A is for “asymmetrical”, B for “borders” (irregular: “Coast of Maine sign”), C for “color” (variegated), D for “diameter” (larger than 6 mm—the size of a pencil eraser) and E for “evolving.”


Merkel cell carcinomas are most often rapidly growing, non-tender red, purple or skin colored bumps that are not painful or itchy. They may be mistaken for a cyst or other type of cancer.


Ultraviolet radiation from sun exposure is the primary cause of skin cancer. Other factors that play a role include:

Smoking tobacco

HPV infections increase the risk of squamous cell carcinoma.

Some genetic syndromesincluding congenital melanocytic nevi syndrome which is characterized by the presence of nevi (birthmarks or moles) of varying size which are either present at birth, or appear within 6 months of birth. Nevi larger than 20 mm (3/4″) in size are at higher risk for becoming cancerous.

Chronic non-healing wounds These are called Marjolin’s ulcers based on their appearance, and can develop into squamous cell carcinoma.

Ionizing radiation, environmental carcinogens, artificial UV radiation (e.g. tanning beds), aging, and light skin color.  It is believed that tanning beds are the cause of hundreds of thousands of basal and squamous cell carcinomas. The World Health Organization now places people who use artificial tanning beds in its highest risk category for skin cancer.

The use of many immunosuppressive medication increase the risk of skin cancer. Cyclosporin A, a calcineurin inhibitor for example increases the risk approximately 200 times, and azathioprine about 60 times.

A malignant epithelial tumor that primarily originates in the epidermis, in squamous mucosa or in areas of squamous metaplasia is referred to as a squamous cell carcinoma.

Macroscopically, the tumor is often elevated, fungating, or may be ulcerated with irregular borders. Microscopically, tumor cells destroy the basement membrane and form sheets or compact masses which invade the subjacent connective tissue (dermis). In well differentiated carcinomas, tumor cells are pleomorphic/atypical, but resembling normal keratinocytes from prickle layer (large, polygonal, with abundant eosinophilic (pink) cytoplasm and central nucleus).

Their disposal tends to be similar to that of normal epidermis: immature/basal cells at the periphery, becoming more mature to the centre of the tumor masses. Tumor cells transform into keratinized squamous cells and form round nodules with concentric, laminated layers, called “cell nests” or “epithelial/keratinous pearls”. The surrounding stroma is reduced and contains inflammatory infiltrate (lymphocytes). Poorly differentiated squamous carcinomas contain more pleomorphic cells and no keratinization.


Sunscreen is effective and thus recommended to prevent melanoma[and squamous cell carcinoma.There is little evidence that it is effective in preventing basal cell carcinoma. Other advice to reduce rates of skin cancer includes: avoiding sunburning, wearing protective clothing, sunglasses and hats, and attempting to avoid sun exposure or periods of peak exposure. The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force recommends that people between 9 and 25 years of age be advised to avoid ultraviolet light.

The risk of developing skin cancer can be reduced through a number of measures including: decreasing indoor tanning and mid day sun exposure, increasing the use of sunscreen, and avoiding the use of tobacco products.

There is insufficient evidence either for or against screening for skin cancers.Vitamin supplements and antioxidant supplements have not been found to have an effect in prevention. Evidence for a benefit from dietary measures is tentative.


Treatment is dependent on type of cancer, location of the cancer, age of the patient, and whether the cancer is primary or a recurrence. Treatment is also determined by the specific type of cancer. For a small basal cell cancer in a young person, the treatment with the best cure rate (Mohs surgery or CCPDMA) might be indicated. In the case of an elderly frail man with multiple complicating medical problems, a difficult to excise basal cell cancer of the nose might warrant radiation therapy (slightly lower cure rate) or no treatment at all. Topical chemotherapy might be indicated for large superficial basal cell carcinoma for good cosmetic outcome, whereas it might be inadequate for invasive nodular basal cell carcinoma or invasive squamous cell carcinoma.   In general, melanoma is poorly responsive to radiation or chemotherapy.

For low-risk disease, radiation therapy (external beam radiotherapy or brachytherapy), topical chemotherapy (imiquimod or 5-fluorouracil) and cryotherapy (freezing the cancer off) can provide adequate control of the disease; both, however, may have lower overall cure rates than certain type of surgery. Other modalities of treatment such as photodynamic therapy, topical chemotherapy, electrodesiccation and curettage can be found in the discussions of basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma.

Mohs’ micrographic surgery (Mohs surgery) is a technique used to remove the cancer with the least amount of surrounding tissue and the edges are checked immediately to see if tumor is found. This provides the opportunity to remove the least amount of tissue and provide the best cosmetically favorable results. This is especially important for areas where excess skin is limited, such as the face. Cure rates are equivalent to wide excision. Special training is required to perform this technique. An alternative method is CCPDMA and can be performed by a pathologist not familiar with Mohs surgery.

In the case of disease that has spread (metastasized), further surgical procedures or chemotherapy may be required.


Currently, surgical excision is the most common form of treatment for skin cancers. The goal of reconstructive surgery is restoration of normal appearance and function. The choice of technique in reconstruction is dictated by the size and location of the defect. Excision and reconstruction of facial skin cancers is generally more challenging due to presence of highly visible and functional anatomic structures in the face.

When skin defects are small in size, most can be repaired with simple repair where skin edges are approximated and closed with sutures. This will result in a linear scar. If the repair is made along a natural skin fold or wrinkle line, the scar will be hardly visible. Larger defects may require repair with a skin graft, local skin flap, pedicled skin flap, or a microvascular free flap. Skin grafts and local skin flaps are by far more common than the other listed choices.

Skin grafting is patching of a defect with skin that is removed from another site in the body. The skin graft is sutured to the edges of the defect, and a bolster dressing is placed atop the graft for seven to ten days, to immobilize the graft as it heals in place. There are two forms of skin grafting: split thickness and full thickness. In a split thickness skin graft, a shaver is used to shave a layer of skin from the abdomen or thigh. The donor site, regenerates skin and heals over a period of two weeks. In a full thickness skin graft, a segment of skin is totally removed and the donor site needs to be sutured closed.

Split thickness grafts can be used to repair larger defects, but the grafts are inferior in their cosmetic appearance. Full thickness skin grafts are more acceptable cosmetically. However, full thickness grafts can only be used for small or moderate sized defects.

Local skin flaps are a method of closing defects with tissue that closely matches the defect in color and quality. Skin from the periphery of the defect site is mobilized and repositioned to fill the deficit. Various forms of local flaps can be designed to minimize disruption to surrounding tissues and maximize cosmetic outcome of the reconstruction. Pedicled skin flaps are a method of transferring skin with an intact blood supply from a nearby region of the body. An example of such reconstruction is a pedicled forehead flap for repair of a large nasal skin defect. Once the flap develops a source of blood supply form its new bed, the vascular pedicle can be detached.


The mortality rate of basal cell and squamous cell carcinoma are around 0.3% causing 2000 deaths per year in the US. In comparison the mortality rate of melanoma is 15–20% and it causes 6500 deaths per year. Even though it is much less common, malignant melanoma is responsible for 75% of all skin cancer-related deaths.

Skin cancer result in 80,000 deaths a year as of 2010; 49,000 of which are due to melanoma and 31,000 of which are due to non-melanoma skin cancers.  This is up from 51,000 in 1990.

More than 3.5 million cases of skin cancer are diagnosed annually in the United States, which makes it the most common form of cancer in that country. According to the Skin Cancer Foundation, one in five Americans will develop skin cancer at some point of their lives. The first most common form of skin cancer is basal cell carcinoma, followed by the squamous cell carcinoma. Although the incidence of many cancers in the United States is falling, the incidence of melanoma keeps growing, with approximately 68,729 melanomas diagnosed in 2004 according to reports of the National Cancer Institute.

The survival rate for patients with melanoma depends upon when they start treatment. The cure rate is very high when melanoma is detected in early stages, when it can easily be removed surgically. The prognosis is less favorable if the melanoma has spread to other parts of the body.

In the UK, 84,500 non-melanoma skin cancers were registered in 2007 although a study estimated that at least 100,000 cases are diagnosed each year. Most NMSCs were basal cell carcinomas or squamous cell carcinomas. In 2007, 10,672 cases of malignant melanoma were diagnosed.

Australia and New Zealand exhibit one of the highest rates of skin cancer incidence in the world, almost four times the rates registered in the United States, the UK and Canada. Around 434,000 people receive treatment for non-melanoma skin cancers and 10,300 are treated for melanoma. Melanoma is the most common type of cancer in people between 15–44 years in both countries. The incidence of skin cancer has been increasing.The incidence of melanoma among Auckland residents of European descent in 1995 was 77.7 cases per 100,000 people per year, and was predicted to increase in the 21st century because of “the effect of local stratospheric ozone depletion and the time lag from sun exposure to melanoma development

Baking Soda

Baking soda neutralizes the stinging, burning and itching that is a signature symptom of most types of foot fungus. This allows the fungus to heal without being further irritated by you scratching the area. Dump 1 tbsp. of baking soda into a small dish, then add enough water to make a thick paste. Smear the paste onto the infected areas (particularly between your toes), let it dry for five to 10 minutes, then rinse it off with cool water. Pat your feet dry with a clean towel and apply a light dusting of cornstarch to soak up sweat and other moisture that can irritate the fungus. Repeat the treatment two to three times daily until the fungus disappears.

Salt Soak

A salt soak can soothe and heal sores related to athlete’s foot. Dissolve 2 tsp. of salt in 1 quart of warm water and pour the mixture in a shallow basin. Soak your feet in the salt water for five to 10 minutes, repeating the treatment several times a day until your infection fades.

Plain, unsweetened yogurt that contains a live culture can curtail foot fungus. The acidophilus bacteria in the yogurt halts the spread of fungus and kills the existing fungus that’s causing the infection. Use a cotton swab to apply the yogurt to the affected areas of your feet, then let the yogurt dry completely. Rinse the crusted yogurt patches from your feet with warm water. Repeat the treatment up to three times a day, if desired.

Mustard Powder

Mustard powder contains powerful acid that will kill fungus. Add about a teaspoon of mustard powder to a shallow basin filled with warm water, then soak your feet in it for about 30 minutes. Repeat the treatment in the morning and at night until the fungus disappears. If you don’t have mustard powder, a few drops of mustard oil will also do the trick.


What Are the Treatments for Fungus on the Skin?

Most likely, you’ve seen the commercials. A bright yellow fungus saying, “I’m a dermatophyte,” peels back a toenail and hops underneath to join his buddies in a feeding frenzy.  In reality, a dermatophyte is a type of fungus that causes common skin, nail and hair disorders, including ringworm and jock itch.

Topical Treatments

Dermatophytes are fungal infections that infect keratinized tissue. The uppermost layer of skin, comprised of keratinized cells, or cells that have flattened, dried out and died, create the perfect host environment for dermatophytes.

As hair shafts and fingernails and toenails are also comprised of keratinized cells, certain dermatophytes specifically target those areas. Further, the fungus thrives in dark, moist, warm environments. Athlete’s foot is an example of a dermatophyte infection, as the fungus thrives in the area between toes. Scalp ringworm is another example.

When an outbreak is localized, a topical ointment may clear it up. Treatment can take 6 to 8 weeks, and sometimes longer. Directions call for twice daily applications. Topical medications to treat a dermatophyte infection include terbinafine, of which Lamisil is one brand name, clotrimazole such as Lotrimin, Mycelex, and econazole, or Spectazole.

Ciclopirox, or Penlac, is an antifungal lacquer that may be prescribed for mild to moderate cases of onychomycosis, which is a fungal nail infection caused by dermatophytes. To prepare the nail, a physician may file away as much of the infected nail as possible. Similar to a nail polish, this medication is painted onto nails once daily. Once a week, the built-up layers are removed with alcohol and the treatment begins again. The treatment can take up to a year.

Oral Medications

Because of the difficulty in treating onychomycosis with topical medications, a systemic antifungal is often prescribed. Itraconazole, or Sporanox, and terbinafine, Lamisil, are common prescriptions. Mayo Clinic reports that treatment may last 6 to 12 weeks.

Because these antifungals make it possible for a new, uninfected nail to grow, rather than treating the existing diseased nail, full treatment is realized only after the new nail has fully grown in, which can take months. Recurrence is a possibility, especially in people whose hands and feet continue to be exposed to moist environments.

For tinea capitis–a fungal infection of the scalp–riseofulvin is often prescribed. An extensive infection, this affects multiple areas of the body and may require oral medication. As with tinea capitis, riseofulvin may be prescribed.

Home Remedies

In most cases, a dermatophyte infection cannot be fully cured with home remedies. Antifungal medications are often needed. Anecdotal reports suggest that soaking feet daily in 1 part vinegar to 2 parts warm water can inhibit growth. Other reports claim that Vick’s Vaporub applied to the nail may work.

There are certain things you can do to treat symptoms, limit the spread of infection, lessen the severity and keep yourself more comfortable. Tight shoes and clothing, as well as synthetic materials that trap air and moisture, encourage fungus to flourish.

While treating the infection, wear loose, natural fibers and use socks that keep moisture away from feet. Better yet, keep feet exposed to dry air. Dusting the feet and other affected areas with cornstarch also helps to keep moisture at bay.


What Are the Causes of Body Fungus?


Dermatophytes, a group of fungi that can cause athlete’s foot, can live in dirt.

Under normal conditions, the skin is adept at keeping pathogens from invading the body. The uppermost layer of skin is composed of dead, flattened cells. The cells form a barrier on the skin’s surface. On top of that, skin has an acid mantle. A combination of skin oil and perspiration, the acid mantle is a slightly acidic barrier that makes an unfriendly environment for many molds, fungi, bacteria and viruses. When the acid mantle breaks down, or when the skin is torn, even microscopically, the invaders can gain a foothold.


Dermatophytes, a group of fungi that cause ringworm, can be found on normal, healthy skin. Very common fungi, dermatophytes live in dirt, on people and even on animals. They can form a variety of rashes on the body, depending on where they gain a hold. Called ringworm or ringworm of the body when they gains access to the trunk, legs, arms or face, they form a circular red itchy rash. Ringworm can also gain access to other areas of the body. When dermatophytes infect the groin area, they form the rash known as jock itch. On the feet, a dermatophyte infection creates the itchy outbreak known as athlete’s foot. The fungi can also infect the scalp and beard area, where they cause circular bald patches. Further, dermatophytes can infect the nails, where they destroy the nail and nail bed.



Yeasts are unicellular fungi. Candida albicans is a yeast-like fungus that commonly lives on human skin and generally causes no problems. Occasionally, though, the fungus will overproduce and cause illness in the host. A candida infection of the nipples is fairly common among women who are breastfeeding. The skin of the nipples frequently becomes irritated during breastfeeding and can crack and tear, allowing candida a way in. Because the area is often moist with breast milk and warmed by the nearness of a suckling baby, the nipple lends itself to candida growth and infection. describes pain and burning of the nipples as the main symptom of the infection. Stevia Adds Sweetness, But Do Not Call It A Sweetener

Don’t sweeten your coffee, “supplement it!” instructs a mysterious box in the nutritional supplement section of the grocery. Showing a white powder being poured into coffee, the box contains packets of refined Stevia- which swelling ranks of initiates have come to know as a South American herb that is far sweeter than sugar, calorie free, and safe for diabetics.

Call it what you like-but not a sweetener. Stevia is not approved as a food additive by the Food and Drug Administration and thus can be marketed only as a dietary supplement. However, as it pops up in a growing number of health conscious restaurants and spas-and this fall in groceries like Safeway-the word is spreading among those who want to avoid sugar but do not trust chemical sweeteners. The herb was used historically by Paraguayan Indians and as a sweetener in Japan since the early 1970s, with no reported ill effects. However, research on Stevia remains inadequate to earn it FDA approval. What studies exist are inconclusive. Very large amounts of Stevia reduced sperm count in rats and interfered with carbohydrate metabolism. However, some studies suggest otherwise. And the real concern is in adding Stevia to the food supply, not in sprinkling a bit in one’s tea.

Stevia is powerful. By all accounts, Stevia is an acquired taste. Make no mistake.-it is powerfully sweet, and it has a licorice like aftertaste. “People who are used to using NutraSweet or other artificial sweeteners have no problem switching over to Stevia,” says grower Mark Langan of Mulberry Creek Herb Farm in Huron, Ohio. In US News’ unscientific taste test of dried Stevia leaves and Stevia sweetened muffins, a minority made faces at the sweetness, most gave their approval, and one ate the dried leaves like candy.

Even diehards say that Stevia works best as another sweetening option in your cupboard, like honey or molasses. Dedicated cooks are finding ways to use it outright, and for the rest of us, there are several Stevia cookbooks. Lisa Miller, 39, a homemaker and mother of six in Mesa, Arizona, spent two years experimenting with Stevia and now rarely uses sugar. When baking, she adds applesauce to compensate for the bulk lost when subbing Stevia for sugar. “I have two children with attention deficit disorder, and sugar makes them bounce off the walls,” she says. Now, “the sugar’s put up so high they don’t even know where to find it”

Lack of Sleep Increases Diabetes Risk

PHILADELPHIA (Reuters Health) – A chronic lack of sleep may cause far more serious problems than a tendency to nod off the next day, researchers warn. Their study presented Monday at the American Diabetes Association’s annual meeting found that people who do not get enough sleep on a regular basis may become less sensitive to insulin which, over time, can raise the risk of obesity, high blood pressure and diabetes.

In fact, chronic sleep deprivation–6.5 hours or less of sleep a night–had the same effect on insulin resistance as aging, Bryce A. Mander, a research assistant at the University of Chicago in Illinois, and a study author, told Reuters Health.

“Just like poor diet, sedentary lifestyle, chronic stress and aging, sleep loss is a…risk factor (for type 2 diabetes),” Mander said.

Type 2 diabetes occurs when the body loses its ability to respond to insulin, the body’s key blood sugar-regulating hormone. This insulin resistance causes blood sugar levels to rise, which in turn can increase the risk for a number of serious medical complications including kidney damage, heart disease, blindness and lower limb amputations.

According to the study, led by Dr. Eve Van Cauter, of the University of Chicago, healthy adults who averaged 316 minutes of sleep a night–about 5.2 hours–over 8 consecutive nights secreted 50% more insulin than their more rested counterparts who averaged 477 minutes of sleep a night, or about 8 hours. As a result, “short sleepers” were 40% less sensitive to insulin. The researchers suggest that sleep deprivation, which is becoming commonplace in industrialized countries, may play a role in the current epidemic of type 2 diabetes. Mander cited a poll by the National Sleep Foundation documenting a steady decline in the number of hours Americans sleep each night. In 1975, the average American slept 7.5 hours, down from 9 hours in 1910. Today, adults sleep about 7 hours a night, he said.

While the findings add to a growing body of research on the role of sleep on human health, further research will focus on the mechanism by which sleep affects glucose regulation and what affect longer sleep will have on short sleepers at risk for diabetes.

“Basically, one must lead a healthy life in all ways, have a good diet, exercise regularly, minimize stress if possible, but also sleep as much as you can,” Mander said.


The Process Of Getting Well

Healing is different from, and so much more than eliminating or suppressing symptoms. This is confusing because symptom removal can look like healing, while healing may not produce symptom removal for months or even years. A healed body does not have cancer. However, just getting rid of a cancer, whether by surgery or by natural methods, is not healing. It is symptom removal. Nor is ‘healing a broken leg’ the kind of healing I am referring to. That, too, is usually just symptom removal.

In fact, healing is a path that can be embraced. It is a process quite foreign to our medical system and to our culture. It is essentially a reversal of the process involved in becoming ill, and at the same time an awakening to one’s true nature and the meaning of life.

Western medical science has pursued a path of fragmentation, separating mind from body, thought from emotion, and organ from organ. This has produced many marvelous technologies for symptom removal. But it does not produce healing. Healing involves re-integrating or re-membering (bringing the members back together).


On the physical level, healing involves following a healthful diet and a healthful lifestyle with lots of rest. It may involve changes in activities, consuming special foods, taking supplementary nutrients, and often the use of other natural therapies of various kinds.

At a mental level, healing involves taking full responsibility for oneself, committing to oneself and to happiness and health, and releasing any habit, behavior, job, persons, attitudes or emotions that are blocking healing. It also involves discipline, forgiveness of self and others, desire, allowing and surrender.

Healing also involves an expansion of consciousness and a new understanding of who we are and why we are here. All of this is part of the healing process.


Most of us are driven by our emotions. These include fear, longing, physical desires, anger, resentment, guilt and others. These are considered normal emotions and are even encouraged by some psychologists.

Healing requires detaching oneself from what is for many people an emotional roller coaster. One can be up one moment and down the next. Good days alternate with bad ones, and so forth.

Many methods can help to even out the emotions and produce more happy times and fewer roller coaster rides. These range from traditional psychotherapy and many non-traditional techniques to improving the health of the body. This is a great help because the brain is a chemical organ. Meditation techniques can teach the mind detachment.

Emotional healing also involves letting go of all that is not conducive to a positive emotional environment. For many, this is the most difficult step in emotional healing. This can mean a change in one’s relationships, one’s family situation, work or even location. Some situations are clearly damaging and negative from an emotional viewpoint and will block healing.


The ego, with which everyone is identified most of the time, is small and insignificant no matter what it thinks. Moments that are called peak experiences, ecstasy or enlightenment are when the ego has somehow been put aside.

Healing involves touching the deeper self, which is vast, powerful and mysterious. It has been approached through LSD therapy, but this is a dangerous method. Near-death experiences and out-of-body experiences touch it. People returning from these experiences are often transformed. Their lives change dramatically and their illnesses and neuroses often vanish. Excellent books about these experiences are those by Raymond Moody, Damian Brinkley and others.

Writers from biblical times to the present have described vast realms and dimensions inhabited by incredible beings, places we visit during sleep, and so forth. We seldom give ourselves credit for the beings we are. We also need to acknowledge who we are and why we are here.  You can find that in only one book that has out sold any other book in the world:  The Bible, King James Version.

While physical symptoms may be addressed along the way, the spiritual self also needs to be a focus. The challenge of healing is not to fall back into the fragmented way of thinking that characterizes conventional medicine and often even natural health care.

Learn about Forgiveness of your self and others.  Once you forgive, you will find yourself spirtiually healed, let go, let God.


Although we are created beings, we are also co-creators. At times, we may elect to take on a condition to learn about it, or to transmute it and heal it for self or others. For what happens to each individual affects everyone.

There is more and more evidence that individuals and groups of humans, for example, praying for peace or healing, can have powerful influences upon illness and other situations. Double-blind scientific experiments prove that prayer, for example, can affect the outcome of surgery and other medical outcomes. This is explored in detail in two excellent books, Pray Well by Walter Weston and Space, Time and Medicine by Larry Dossey, MD, Again Read King James : Bible… Psalms 139: Healing Prayer


One of the most damaging attitudes if one wants to heal is that of feeling like a victim. It is extremely disempowering. One may seem to be the victim of one’s upbringing, or of germs or of a tumor. However, the spiritual reality is different. Our upbringing, schooling and many forces in society would prefer that we do not recognize our own power. Politicians love to identify victims so they can “help” them. Yet recognizing and reclaiming one’s power is central to the path of healing.

Power implies responsibility or the ability to respond. The healing process requires above all taking full responsibility for everything in one’s life. Taking full responsibility for whatever exists in one’s life is very empowering. If you created a mess, you can un-create it.

Unfortunately, one has the power to give away one’s power. Then one deludes oneself that someone or something “did it to you”. This is what most people do most of the time.

One can also use one’s power to create limitations of all sorts. For example, some people use their infinite power to judge that meat is bad, so they limit their diets and become ill.

If misunderstood, taking full responsibility can cause extreme guilt, remorse and self-blame. Much of this comes from old attitudes about a harsh, judgmental God or from other harsh authority figures that have become internalized. Guilt is always false because one does not ever know all the facts about a situation. Even if one person kills another, we do not know if it was set up to fulfill the needs of both people. This idea is very foreign to our legal system, but is part of the mystery of healing. One cannot draws conclusions about why one succeeds and another does not, why one is handicapped and another is not, and so forth. All such conclusions are speculative and not helpful or needed.

Responsibility, however, does not mean somberness and heaviness. Excessive seriousness always impairs the healing process. One can be committed without being overly serious. The phrase used in the bible is to be “in the world but not of it”. Many suffer with the disease of ought-ism.

Taking responsibility also does not mean not accepting help. Far from it. We are here to help one another awaken, and thus to heal. Taking full responsibility means respecting the sovereignty of each individual and ability of each to make choices. Many do-gooders secretly do not trust the “masses” to make good choices, and therefore they feel they must “help” by imposing their vision of the good society on others. This just gets in the way of the healing process and always backfires.


Healing is facilitated or impeded by a myriad of techniques or modalities. I suggest to clients that they can heal, but I am not sure how it will occur, or how much effort and searching it will take. One has only to consult the holistic healing section of a library or book store to be deluged with healing methods and modalities.  One only has to read our manual for life.  The Holy Bible.

The same condition can be approached through physical, biochemical, electrical, emotional, mental, spiritual or energetic means. All may be helpful in some instances. It is worthwhile to distinguish methods that bring wholeness from the many remedies that simply suppress or rearrange symptoms.

The multiplicity of healing methods reflects just how complex we are. It also reflects how exotic and remarkable is the universe in which we live. Indeed, healing is in part about opening ourselves to unlikely and unlimited possibilities. Some would call these miracles. Understanding the limitless possibilities for healing in itself facilitates healing, as it helps release the fear and despair that are often at the root of what must be overcome for healing to occur. Healing involves an expansion of awareness.

Some say that only love heals. Love is the essence of what we are, and the force that keeps us going. It has nothing to do with romance, sex, families or friends. In this view, healers and techniques serve only to remind us of our loveliness and wholeness. When we love ourselves enough, negative energy patterns disappear and the body heals.

To the extent one believes in any method it will be effective for healing. At times, one may have to be tricked into healing by being placed in fearsome machines, experiencing pain, or a thousand other ways.

That methods are only triggers for healing can help us understand healing miracles that occur commonly, if one takes the time to look for them. We are consciously aware of very little of what is taking place within and around us. Perhaps for this reason, all methods or therapies may have a place and time when they are helpful for healing.


Healing happens! Doctors, nurses, therapists, ministers and counselors facilitate the healing process, but do not cause it. Some have developed certain gifts, or are more open, in touch with their abilities and willing to share with others. Looking at a sunset, petting your cat, sitting under a tree, talking to a friend and thousands of other experiences can also facilitate healing. Have we all not had such experiences? The Ultimate phsician of all time: Jesus Christ.

It is easy to become confused by laws that proclaim that only those with certain licenses or degrees may be healers. Other laws proclaim that only certain “approved methods” can heal us. Some day I hope these laws will be done away with. They only get in the way of the process of healing.

Research reported by Dr. Bernie Siegel indicates those who question and even disobey their doctors, taking back control of their healing process, fare better than the “good, cooperative” patients. What does this say about the present structure of our medical system?


Desire is the motivating force for everything. A strong desire for healing, no matter how it is felt, is essential for healing. Our desires create our lives.

Allowing is also an important aspect of the healing process. Allowing is the process of receiving healing. It is to be contrasted with striving, which is an ego activity. Allowing presumes the answers and the solutions are present, but must be allowed or received into one’s life. This is very different from the concept of striving, which presumes a chaotic, hostile world in which one must carve out a tiny island of health and happiness. Both striving and allowing have a place, but allowing is more foreign to most people.

Surrender is another often misunderstood aspect of the healing process. One does not surrender to an illness, though one must often allow symptoms to play out as part of the healing. One surrenders to the higher will or God’s will. One must come to the understanding that God’s will is better than anything our puny egos can come up with. Often, our own solutions must be exhausted first, leaving us in despair! This is fine, if this is what it takes. Eventually, we surrender it all – our fears, feelings of smallness, symptoms and even the ego’s feelings of despair.


Many books on healing describe the great need we all have to forgive others and to be forgiven. We need to be forgiven for our misperceptions that caused us to judge people and situations. Events are in fact neutral. Our perception of events determines the meanings we give them, and our responses to them. This is an important principle. Stress is only a resistance created by our responses, by our need to control, justify or even understand an event. Learning not to judge events and situations is a great part of healing and forgiveness.

By forgiving others, we obtain forgiveness for ourselves. Self-forgiveness, in turn, frees us to finally live without guilt and fear. Forgiving ourselves is often more difficult than forgiving others. “Forgive us as we forgive others” is thus a powerful healing principle.


The word discipline is derived from the same root as the word disciple. Discipline is not so much a harsh striving to achieve a goal, as it is the honing of one’s skill in an area. Discipline may be simply learning to follow one’s intuition, instead of being distracted.

Healing often involves developing discipline. Forces that controlled the body and emotions often have to be brought under conscious control. Regimens that retrain the body and brain may have to be pursued. One may indeed choose illness to learn discipline. This can be as simple as following a diet and doing some exercise. Or it may involve years of working through emotional traumas, following the threads of intuition to their sources deep within the psyche.


Having worked with over 20,000 patients, those who heal tend to be those willing to make whatever changes are needed to facilitate the healing process. Those who want healing “on their own terms” do far worse.

This includes the time frame for healing, what healing looks like and feels like, and the outcome in terms of every aspect of one’s life.


If healing occurs very easily, it is not healing. It is symptom-removal, which can look like healing. Healing is an involved process that must involve all aspects of life and must touch the deepest places inside one.

Healing also involves a change in attitude that changes every facet of life. If it does not do this, it is not healing. At times, distinguishing the two is difficult.


*Certain axioms or themes are involved in the healing process:
* We are each powerful, mysterious, complex, multidimensional beings, no matter how frail and dysfunctional the body may be.
* There is a oneness of body, mind and spirit. There is also a oneness or collective consciousness shared by all beings.
* Events originate from within. We create our lives. This power is never taken away, though it may be given away temporarily.
* Healing has to do with taking full and complete responsibility for all of one’s creations.
* Techniques, methods, and therapies may facilitate healing. However, ultimately, life heals or love heals, not a pill or operation.
* Healers, doctors, and therapists are facilitators only.
* Desire, allowing and surrender play critical roles in healing.
* Forgiveness of self and others are important aspects of the healing process.
* Discipline, derived from same root as ‘disciple’, is an important aspect of healing.

These attitudes must carry over into all aspects of one’s life. For example, one who believes the government should run the health care system does not understand the axiom that healing requires that each person take full responsibility for healing. Responsibility for healing can never be delegated to a government agency. My experience is that if the desire for healing is present, the funds will always be found.

Shifting one’s perspective to embrace these axioms of healing is one of the most important activities one can engage in.

Pills, Patches, And Shots: Can Hormones Prevent Aging??

Hormones are powerful chemicals that help keep our bodies working normally. They are made naturally, by the body, and can affect us in far-reaching ways. Levels of some hormones decrease as a normal part of aging. In other cases, the body may fail to make enough of a hormone for other reasons. In either case, the body’s hormone levels can be increased by taking hormone supplements – pills, shots, or medicated skin patches.

Certain hormone supplements have received a lot of attention lately, including DHEA (dehydro-epiandrosterone), human growth hormone (hGH), melatonin, and testosterone. Unproven claims that taking these supplements can make people feel young again or that they can prevent aging have been appearing in the news. However, when it comes to hormones, more is not necessarily better.


Groups of special cells – glands – make chemicals called hormones and release them into the bloodstream. Hormone’s taken as supplements also end up in the bloodstream. In either case, the blood then carries hormones to different parts of the body. There, hormones influence the way organs and tissues work. Hormone supplements may not have exactly the same effects on us that our own naturally produced hormones have, because the body may process them differently. Another difference is that high doses of supplements, whether pills, skin patches, or shots, may result in higher amounts of hormones in the blood than are healthy. When that happens, any negative effects that even the body’s own hormones can cause may increase. Tiny amounts of these powerful chemicals, whether made by the body or taken as supplements, can have widespread effects.

DHEA is made by the adrenal glands, which sit on top of each kidney. Although it is not known whether DHEA itself causes hormonal effects, the body breaks DHEA down into two hormones that are known to affect us in many ways: estrogen and testosterone (see below). Supplements of DHEA can be bought without a prescription, and also may be found under the name “dehydroepiandrosterone.” After people reach the age of about 30, their bodies start to make less DHEA, and the amount of DHEA found in the bloodstream continues to drop, as people grow older. Supplements are sold as an anti-aging remedy claimed, by some, to improve energy, strength, and immunity. DHEA is also said to increase muscle and decrease fat.

Right now, there is no reliable evidence that DHEA supplements do any of these things. However, there are early signs that DHEA supplements may lead to liver damage, even when taken briefly.Some people’s bodies make large amounts of estrogen and testosterone from DHEA, while others make smaller amounts. There is no way to predict who will make more and who will make less. Researchers are concerned that DHEA supplements may cause high levels of estrogen or testosterone in some people. The body’s own testosterone plays a role in prostate cancer, and high levels of naturally produced estrogen are suspected of increasing breast cancer risk. It is not yet known for certain if supplements of estrogen and testosterone, or supplements of DHEA, also increase the risk of developing these types of cancer. In women, high testosterone levels increase the risk of heart disease and cause growth of facial hair.

Overall, the studies that have been done so far do not provide a clear picture of the risks and benefits of DHEA. For example, some studies show that DHEA helps build muscle, but other studies do not. Researchers are working to find more definite answers about DHEA’s effects on aging, muscles, and the immune system. In the meantime, people who are thinking about taking supplements of this hormone should understand that its effects are not fully known. Some of these unknown effects might turn out to be harmful.

Human growth hormone (hGH) supplements also are claimed, by some, to reduce the signs of aging – that is, to increase muscle and decrease fat, and to give people a feeling of well-being and energy.

Even though there is no proof that hGH can prevent aging, some people spend a great deal of money on supplements. Shots of the hormone can cost more than $15,000 a year. They are available only by prescription and should be given by a doctor.

Human growth hormone is made by the pituitary gland, just under the brain, and is important for normal development and maintenance of our tissues and organs. It is especially important for normal growth in children. Human growth hormone levels often decrease as people age.

Studies have shown that supplements are helpful to certain people. Sometimes, children are unusually short because their bodies do not make hGH. When they take supplements, their growth improves. Young adults who have no pituitary gland (because of surgery for a pituitary tumor, for example) cannot make the hormone, and they become obese. When they are given supplements, they lose weight.

Researchers are doing studies to find out if hGH can help make older people stronger by building up their muscles and whether it can reduce body fat. They are watching their patients very carefully, because side effects can be serious in older adults. Side effects of hGH treatment can include diabetes and pooling of fluid in the skin and other tissues, which may lead to high blood pressure and heart failure. Joint pain and carpal tunnel syndrome also may occur.

People in search of the “fountain of youth” may have a hard time finding a doctor who will give them shots of hGH. Some people put themselves in danger by trying to get it any way they can. For example, some people went to a clinic in Mexico to get supplements. The clinic was shut down later because side effects were not being carefully monitored by doctors.

The hormone melatonin is made by the pineal gland, in the brain, and decreases with age in some people.

Supplements of melatonin can be bought without a prescription. Some people claim that melatonin is an anti-aging remedy, a sleep remedy, and an antioxidant (antioxidants protect against “free radicals,” naturally occurring molecules that cause damage to the body). Early test-tube studies suggest that melatonin may be effective against free radicals, in large doses. However, cells produce antioxidants naturally, and in test-tube experiments, cells reduce the amount they make when they are exposed to additional antioxidants.

Claims that melatonin can slow or reverse aging are very far from proven. Studies of melatonin have been much too limited to support these claims, and have focused on animals, not people.

Research on sleep shows that melatonin does play a role in the sleeping and waking cycle people go through daily, and that supplements can improve sleep in some cases. If melatonin is taken at the wrong time, though, it can disrupt the sleep/wake cycle. The effects of supplements differ from person to person, and more research is needed to find out under what conditions melatonin helps, not disturbs, sleep.

Side effects of melatonin may include confusion, drowsiness, and headache the next morning. Animal studies suggest that melatonin may cause blood vessels to constrict, a condition that could be dangerous for people with high blood pressure or other cardiovascular problems.

The dose of melatonin usually sold in stores – 3 milligrams – can result in amounts in the blood up to 40 times higher than normal. It is important to remember that melatonin may be found to have far-reaching effects that are still unknown even at the body’s own normal levels, to say nothing of the levels that can be caused by mega doses taken for long periods of time.

Researchers are working to find out more about melatonin’s effects.

Testosterone is thought of as a male hormone, but it is found in both men and women. Because men have more testosterone, their voices are deeper, they have more facial hair, and their muscles are larger. Testosterone also plays a role in sex drive and erection.

Testosterone levels may drop as men age, and changes that take place in older men often are wrongly blamed on lower testosterone. For example, the loss of erection some older men experience often is due to unhealthy arteries, not low testos-terone levels.

Supplements of testosterone are available, only by prescription, for men whose bodies do not make enough of the hormone. Examples of men who do not make enough testosterone are those whose pituitary glands have been destroyed by infections or tumors, or whose testes have been damaged (the testes are the glands that make testosterone in men, and the pituitary gland helps regulate it).

Supplements provide many benefits for men with a genuine deficiency of testosterone. Men’s muscles and bones become smaller and weaker without the hormone, and their sex drive and ability to have erections decrease. Supplements help prevent such problems by restoring normal levels.

But too much testosterone is harmful. Stories about athletes who damaged their health by taking steroids – testosterone supplements – to build up muscle and strength have made headlines. Now, stories about how testosterone can make older men feel young again, and can restore their muscles and their sex drive, have become popular.

The problem is that most of these men already have enough testosterone, and supplements cause them to have more than is normal. The result can be an enlarged prostate gland; harmful cholesterol levels, which may lead to heart disease; psychological problems; infertility; and acne. It is not yet known for certain if testosterone supplements increase the risk of prostate cancer.

Because many women take estrogen supplements for symptoms of menopause, estrogen is included in this fact sheet. Many large, reliable studies have been done on this hormone, and show why it is important to discover both the helpful and harmful effects of a supplement. It is clear that estrogen replacement is helpful to some women after menopause. Women with certain risk factors, however, might decide, along with their doctors, that estrogen supplements are not right for them.

Women have much less estrogen after menopause because the ovaries make dramatically reduced amounts of this reproductive hormone in later life. Studies suggest that reduced estrogen levels are associated with a higher risk of heart disease and osteoporosis – a condition that weakens bones, allowing them to break more easily. These are just two examples of the many areas of the body that can suffer without adequate estrogen.

Research has shown that estrogen supplements prescribed by a doctor can help some women avoid osteoporosis and lower their risk factors for heart disease, the number-one killer of women in the United States. Osteoporosis can lead to severe bone fracture. Patients who are hospitalized for a broken hip have a death rate 12 to 20 percent higher than others in their age group, due to complications. Estrogen helps prevent osteoporosis.

A recent study suggests that estrogen supplements also may delay the onset of Alzheimer’s disease, but more research must be done to confirm this early finding.

On the other hand, some studies have raised concerns about a link between estrogen and cancer of the uterus and a possible link between estrogen and breast cancer. It appears that estrogen given to women after menopause also increases the risk of blood clots. Heart attacks, strokes, and other circulation problems may result from blood clots.

Although much is known about estrogen, scientists are learning more. For example, a recent study suggests that older women whose bones are found to be at lower risk of osteoporosis may be at higher risk of breast cancer (doctors can predict a woman’s likelihood of developing osteoporosis by measuring bone mineral density). Researchers think this increased breast cancer risk may occur in some women whose bodies have produced high amounts of natural estrogen over their lifetime. More research is needed to tell whether estrogen supplements alone increase the risk of breast cancer.

Researchers have studied estrogen for many years. As a result, doctors are better informed about which women are likely to benefit from supplements and about the right doses to prescribe so that the risk of side effects is reduced. Adding progestin, another female hormone, to estrogen supplements lowers risk of uterine cancer.

The decision whether or not to take estrogen is a personal one. Each woman, along with her doctor, should ask herself: Is there heart disease in my family? Or breast cancer? What are the results of my bone mineral density measurement? Have I had blood clots before, or has my doctor told me that I am prone to blood clots?

There is no right or wrong answer to these questions. Each woman must weigh her answers, based on her health history, with her doctor.

The NIA sponsors many research projects that will reveal more about the risks and benefits of hormone supplements. One goal is to discover how DHEA, melatonin, and other supplements affect people over time.

Trophic factors are substances that help control the growth and repair of our tissues and organs throughout our lives. Some trophic factors are considered hormones. Researchers are studying them to find out if decreasing levels of these factors are responsible, at least in part, for the diseases and disabilities seen in aging. Now in its fourth year, a group of 5-year studies of trophic factors is under way. Testosterone, estrogen, and growth hormone are included in the study.

It is important to remember that these studies may not give immediate or final answers, especially in the case of DHEA, melatonin, and human growth hormone, since research on these supplements is fairly new. For example, some of the studies may simply give researchers more information about what kinds of questions they should ask in their next studies. Research is a step-by-step process, and larger studies may be needed to give more definite answers.

Until more is known about DHEA, melatonin, and hGH, consumers should view them with a good deal of caution – and doubt. Despite what advertisements or stories in the media may claim, hormone supplements have not been proven to prevent aging. Some harmful side effects already have been discovered, and further research may uncover others.

More is known about estrogen and testosterone, and people who are concerned about genuine deficiencies of these hormones should consult with their doctors about supplements. Meanwhile, people who choose to take any hormone supplement without a doctor’s supervision do so at their own risk.

The Lowdown on Aspartame (NutraSweet)

Artificial sweeteners are marketed with the promise of weight control, and the vast majority of people who consume them do so to either lose or avoid gaining weight. Folks, this is a fraud of gigantic proportions.

From 1960 to l976, there was virtually no change in the number of Americans who were overweight: roughly 24 percent of the population. However, from the mid l980s to the present, this number has more than doubled to 54 percent! This coincides with the massive infusion of noncaloric chemical sweeteners and sugar-free “diet” foods that are eaten by close to three-quarters of the adult population.

Although several factors contribute to these alarming statistics, I am convinced that our blind acceptance of the most popular of these artificial sweeteners, aspartame (NutraSweet, Equal, Spoonful), plays a significant role in our current weight problems. Far from helping us lose weight, aspartame has been proven to increase appetite, especially cravings for sweets. Imagine “diet” products that help you pack on extra pounds! And aspartame’s downside doesn’t end with weight gain: This sweetener is associated with multiple health problems.

Aspartame May Cause A Variety Of Diseases

Since aspartame came on the market in l981, it has accounted for more than 75 percent of the complaints reported in the FDA’s Adverse Reaction Monitoring system. The most common adverse reactions attributed to aspartame are headaches, dizziness, attention difficulties, memory loss, slurred speech and vision problems. This cluster of symptoms has become so common that it is actually referred to as “aspartame disease”.

Even more serious disorders have a suspected link with aspartame. Is it an accident that the incidence of brain tumors has increased by 10% since l975? John W. Olney, MD, of the Washington University Medical School in St. Louis believes there may be a link between the two. In an article published in The Journal of Neuropathology and Experimental Neurology, he notes that animal studies reveal high levels of brain tumors in aspartame-fed rats. According to Dr. Olney, recent findings show that aspartame has mutagenic (cancer-causing) potential, and the sharp rise in malignant brain tumors coincides with the increased use of aspartame.

Could serious seizures and vision loss somehow be associated with the sweetener? The U.S. Navy and Air Force published articles in Navy Physiology and Flying Safety with this warning: “several researchers have found aspartame can increase the frequency of seizures, or lower the stimulation necessary to induce them. This means a pilot who drinks diet sodas is more susceptible to flicker vertigo, or to flicker-induced epileptic activity. It also means that all pilots are potential victims of sudden memory loss, dizziness during instrument flight, and gradual loss of vision.”

What about multiple sclerosis, chronic fatigue, rheumatoid arthritis, depression and other mood disorders? I have reviewed scores of documented cases of patients with symptoms so severe that they were mistakenly diagnosed with one of these conditions, only to have all signs of disease completely vanish after getting off aspartame.

The Fda Ignores Safety Concerns

Yet the FDA has chosen to turn a deaf ear to repeated requests by scientists, physicians, and consumers to review aspartame’s safety.

Aspartame has spelled trouble from the get-go. The unique property of this chemical, which is 200 times sweeter than sugar, was accidently discovered in l965 by a chemist trying to develop an ulcer drug. Although the FDA rescinded its initial approval because of studies showing that it caused seizures and brain tumors in lab animals, the agency eventually capitulated to political and monetary pressure and in l981 gave aspartame the stamp of approval. In doing so, this bureaucracy overrode the 3-0 decision of a Public Board of Inquiry, which had reviewed the scientific data and had recommended delaying approval pending further studies on the sweetener’s link with brain cancer.

In the intervening years, safety concerns have mushroomed. Ralph G. Walton, MD, Professor of Psychiatry at Northeastern Ohio Universities College of Medicine, reviewed all the studies on aspartame and found 166 with relevance for human safety. Every one of the 74 studies funded by the aspartame industry gave it a clean bill of health, while 92 percent of those independently funded revealed safety problems.

Aspartame Can Upset Brain Chemistry

Once you understand a bit about the chemistry of aspartame, you’ll see why it can cause so many problems.

Aspartame is comprised of two amino acids, aspartic acid and phenylalanine. Aspartic acid acts as an “excitatory” neurotransmitter, or chemical messenger, in the brain, stimulating neurons to fire. Problems can arise when aspartic acid is out of balance with “inhibitory” amino acids that calm things down. Phenylalanine also easily enters the brain, where it is transformed into neurotransmitters that can further interfere with normal brain function.

This is a likely reason why aspartame lowers the threshold for seizures, mood disorders, and other nervous system problems. This altered brain chemistry may also be responsible for the addictive nature of aspartame. Some patients report that getting off diet soda takes more willpower than giving up cigarettes!

A Little Moonshine For You?

The remaining component, which makes up 10 percent of aspartame, may be the most dangerous part. It is a methyl ester that breaks down after ingestion into methanol, a nervous system toxin also known as free methyl alcohol or wood alcohol. Methanol is extremely harmful to the optic nerve. A main ingredient in “moonshine” it was notorious during Prohibition for causing blindness. Methanol is rapidly released into the bloodstream, where it is further metabolized into other harmful components, including formaldehyde (a known neurotoxin and carcinogen) and formic acid (the poison in ant stings).

Is it any wonder that many of the symptoms of “aspartame disease” are neurological and visual? Drinking a diet soda or two (and I’ve had patients who drink at least a liter a day) delivers a powerful chemical rush with decidedly negative effects. With this kind of questionable history, who would want to consume this artificial chemical, particularly when there are natural and healthy sweeteners available?


Please take the warnings in this article very seriously. Although some people are much more sensitive to aspartame’s adverse effects than others, damage is likely cumulative. Aspartame is particularly harmful to children and the developing fetus. I strongly urge anyone with an aspartame “habit” to get off this harmful sweetener. Don’t trade one bad habit for another by switching to sugar-laden drinks and sweets. Avoid most bottled or canned sodas, teas and juices altogether. If they don’t contain an artificial sweetener, they’re loaded with some kind of sugar. Your beverage of choice should be water. (Try perking it up with a slice of lemon.) Sparkling water, diluted fruit juice, and homemade iced tea flavored with the herbal sweetener stevia are other options. A few drops of stevia also nicely sweeten hot tea, coffee, cereal, yogurt, and other foods.

Emotions and the Endocrine Glands

One reason I admire and respect Chinese Medicine is because of how it integrates emotions with the physical body. In particular, there is a direct correlation in Chinese Medicine between specific negative emotions and their impact on specific organs. We hold anger in the liver, grief in the lungs, fear in the kidneys, the ‘loss of joy’ or sweetness in life in the pancreas. These emotional themes must be considered in a holistic assessment of issues involving these organs as underlying causes of weakness or disease. These unreleased or ‘sticky’ emotions suppress the life force and functional level of the organs leaving them vulnerable to pathogenic attack. Often ‘stuck’ emotions can be lodged in the Acupuncture Meridian system, even within a particular point, creating a blockage that results in no or little ‘light information’ available to the organ in essence the organ is cut off from the incoming chi vital to it’s health.

As emotions are experienced however, there is a more immediate impact on the Endocrine glands. Fear creates a release of Adrenaline, for example, which triggers an instant set of changes we call the ‘fight or flight’ response with numerous physiological effects. These responses include heightened mental alertness, higher blood pressure, muscle tensing, lack of appetite, suppressed digestion and sexual desire, along with rapid and shallow breathing. Those of you who are Certified Biofeedback Practitioners will be very familiar with these stress-related responses, which can become chronic and a major cause of illness.

Along with the nervous system, the Endocrine System is involved in the control of practically all bodily functions other than muscle movement. There are two ‘bridges’ between these systems, the Medulla of the adrenal glands and the Hypothalamus. The Hypothalamus controls Autonomic functions, the Pituitary Gland (and all it controls) and release of other hormones. It is involved with regulating body heat, fluid balance, sleep, appetite, and the emotions of fear and pleasure. It also helps coordinate the body and environment, influencing the pineal gland by its interpretation of light conditions.

Chronic Fatigue Syndrome

What is Chronic Fatigue Syndrome?
Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS) is a condition characterized by prolonged, persistent debilitating fatigue. In general, a diagnosis for CFS requires that the tiredness is severe enough for at least a 50% decrease in the client�s ability to participate in ordinary activities.

What causes CFS?
The exact cause of CFS is unknown. A distinct or direct cause has not been positively identified. Some studies have shown that Chronic Fatigue Syndrome may be caused by inflamed nervous system pathways, Mycoplasma bacterial infection, or viral illness (such as Epstein-Barr) complicated by an inadequate or dysfunctional immune response. Like most autoimmune illnesses, CFS most commonly occurs in women, usually ages 30 to 50.

What are the symptoms of CFS?
Many of the symptoms of CFS are similar to those associated with the flu (muscle aches, headache, and fatigue). However, unlike the flu, while with CFS these symptoms may flow and flow, they never go away. (Imagine dealing with flu symptoms on a daily basis and you know how someone with CFS feels on a good day.)

What other symptoms are sometimes present?
Additional symptoms include:

  • Constant headaches, different those previous in pattern, quality, or severity
  • Feeling  unrefreshed after normally adequate sleep
  • Forgetfulness,  cognitive impairment including confusion or difficulty concentrating, or  irritability
  • Joint pain, often moving from joint to joint, without joint swelling or redness
  • Low-grade fever  (101F or less)
  • Lymph node  tenderness and swelling in the neck or armpit
  • Muscle aches
  • Exercise intolerance: Muscle fatigue that lasts more than 24 hours  after an amount of exercise that would normally be easily tolerated
  • Muscle weakness, all over or multiple locations, not explained by any known disorder
  • Sore throat, red but without drainage or pus

Everybody gets tired! How is the fatigue of CFS different?
The fatigue of CFS is all encompassing. It involves not only the feeling of having gone without rest (even after getting a full night�s sleep, for those that are fortunate; disrupted or irregular sleep patterns is often another side effect of CFS); the fatigue includes muscle weakness, cognitive impairment, and ongoing headaches of varying degrees. Tests have shown that many CFS victims already start off with a lower-than-normal oxygen level in the brain, and exercise, instead of increasing it, actually makes it go lower.

What are the complications of CFS?
CFS causes what might be considered lifestyle restrictions. For people for whom the fatigue is so severe or unpredictable that they are essentially disabled and homebound during much of the course of the illness, this leads to social isolation and an inability to maintain steady employment.

Fungus Overgrowth a Hidden Epidemic

Fungus, including thousands of varieties of yeasts and molds, are plant microforms that have thrived and survived on our planet with very little mutation over millennia. They are present everywhere and are nature recyclers, degrading dying material to be re-used as future nutrients. As such, fungi are more likely to thrive in environments that are warm, moist and dark, like a pile of rotting vegetation, for example.

Some fungi are beneficial in the digestive tract of animals and humans, and some varieties are not. In a similar manner as above, these beneficial fungi help break down the by-products of digestion and help keep the other micro-organisms in the bowel in balance. In particular, forms of Candida attack certain non-beneficial bacteria and viruses. They do so by means of a super-hard probiscus, or point, capable of penetrating the protein coat of viruses.

How has fungal overgrowth become a modern hidden epidemic? Many factors have contributed to this plague. Some informed health professionals have observed the majority of their client concerns are, to some degree, related to a fungal overgrowth. When the bowel fungi proliferate, they can migrate up into the small intestine, and by virtue of their penetrative ability, cross the intestinal wall, enter the bloodstream, and thereby become systemic. Once out of the cage, fungi will colonize practically any area of the body, particularly the digestive organs (anything with a mucosal lining) from the mouth to the colon. Fungus can also colonize the heart, causing what may be mistaken for cholesterol blockages. It can also colonize the lungs, usually misdiagnosed as lung cancer once it produces a mass detectable on x-rays. Fungus can infect the brain, as well as sinuses and ear canals.

Symptoms associated with fungal overgrowth include chronic joint pain, recurrent infections, fatigue, acid indigestion, headaches, including migraines, anal itching, skin conditions, and sensory problems such as tinnitus, vertigo and eye problems. Fungus can cause inflammation in any organ, and has been implied in some cases of prostatitis, endometriosis, uterine fibroids, cardiovascular disease and chronic throat infections. A single Candida plant emits over 70 different toxins, which places a big load on the liver to process all these poisons.

Let’s take a look at some of the predisposing factors that contribute to this overgrowth.

Stress – chronic stress can directly drive the PH into the acidic state. Acid PH provides a friendly environment for not only fungi, but any other opportunistic pathogens. Stress can affect breathing and oxygenation levels (see below).

Diet – Sugar feeds fungus. Grains and refined carbohydrates turn into sugar upon chewing. Alcohol is also a sugar, and dairy products involve lactose, a sugar. Recovering alcoholics tend to crave sugar. When you feed fungus in the body with sugar, the fungi produces alcohol as a by-product. So it is possible for a person with enough of a fungal load to perceive an alcohol buzz after ingesting sugar or refined grains, particularly. Now you know why Homer loves donuts!

Eating habits – Aside from dietary content, the modern fast food mentality precludes the needed phase of relaxed digestion. When there is no parasympathetic support time for proper digestion, food tends to putrefy, enzyme production is taxed leading to pancreatic weakness, and this poorly digested food provides fodder for the overgrowth of fungus. Digestive weakness like low HCL production can also contribute to the problem in a similar fashion.

Antibiotics – It is well known Antibiotic use seriously disrupts the healthy bacteria, or bowel flora, in the colon. This allows for the overgrowth of fungi. Any use of antibiotics needs to be followed with some kind of probiotic program, such as acidophilus and bifidus. Sauerkraut is good here. What is generally overlooked is that much of our meat, poultry and dairy industry freely use antibiotics in order to increase yields, without regulation. As well, hormones and steroids are freely used by the animal products industry and passed on to the unsuspecting consumer. This is a suspected cause of precocious puberty, as girls reach puberty at earlier and earlier ages in recent decades.

Congenital fungal infection – As the birth canal is an excellent environment for fungi and is often experienced as yeast infections, many newborns are now exposed to unhealthy fungi upon delivery. There seems to be an increase in the incidence of infant thrush, which can also be spread by infected nipples, and general digestive problems, or infant colic, in the modern population.

Low Oxygen issues – Fungi are anaerobic organisms. They do not require oxygen; in fact oxygen is toxic to fungi. When fungi invade a body cell, the first thing they do is turn the oxygen metabolism off, making the cell weak and vulnerable to further invasion from other pathogens, particularly viruses can be a precursor to fungal overgrowth. These factors can include stress, smoking, undigested protein (leading to clumping of the red blood cells) and any form of anemia.

There is also a solid fungus – allergy – autoimmune connection. When the bowel fungus overgrowth, particularly Candidas, migrate to the small intestine, they can literally drill holes in the intestinal wall as described above. This leaky gut condition allows food to pass into the bloodstream in an undigested state. The immune system is then alerted to a foreign invader and activates antibodies to attack the enemy. If the protein of the undigested food resembles the protein of a particular body tissue, the immune system also attacks the body, leading to any number of autoimmune diseases such as arthritis, lupus, and irritable bowel syndrome. Also, individual susceptibility to mold can vary, especially when considering the amount of mold present. This is why there are no standards for acceptable levels of mold. The CDC recommends any mold present be removed and prevented from returning.
  • Knowing how mold develops can aid in its eradication and prevention. Mold and mildew grow best in warm, most and shady environments. This is why bathrooms offer ideal conditions for mold to form. Any area of the home that has a high relative humidity is subject to mold growth.
  • Surface mold, as the name implies, is any mold that is found growing on top of another object or surface.
  • Mold can be present in the air. This happens through the release of tiny spores. These spores can grow new mold colonies if they come in contact with water or moisture.
  • A number of chemicals can kill surface mold. Killing surface mold will prevent spores from spreading into the air. But to kill mold, you need to first eliminate the reason for its growth. Reducing the relative humidity levels in your home through the use of fans or air conditioning will greatly help. Once the moisture levels are controlled, you can apply chlorine or oxygen bleach to surface molds. Rubbing alcohol, white vinegar and hydrogen peroxide will also work.
